Chenin blanc (Shay-nan blawn) might be considered an under appreciated white wine in the United States but not in France, where it is known as Vouvray or Montlouis (pronounced Voovray and Mawn-lew-ee, respectively). Made as a dry, a semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet or sparkling wine.

When buying Chenin blanc check the label for the residual sugar level to determine how best to serve with food.

  • Dry Chenin blanc may be sipped as an aperitif or served with turkey, chicken, veal, shellfish/ seafood or goat cheese
  • Sweeter versions may be served with dessert.

Descriptors for Chenin blanc include:

pale to medium yellow to pale gold;
mineral,
crisp acidity,
melon,
honeysuckle,
figs,
honey,
scents of hay,
tropical fruit,
and sometimes vanilla.
